Firearm Training

Firearm Training and Proficiency Training are essential programs designed to teach individuals how to handle, operate, and maintain firearms safely and effectively. These courses cover the fundamentals of firearm usage, from safety protocols to practical skills, ensuring participants gain the confidence and knowledge needed to use firearms responsibly. Whether for personal protection or sport, these training sessions are vital for anyone seeking to improve their shooting accuracy and understanding of firearm laws.

Proficiency Training:

Steps to obtain proficiency are as follows:

1. Obtain Proficiency

  • Enroll for a proficiency training course with The Forensic Hub
  • Learner guides of the applicable Unit Standards are issued
  • Complete the Formative Assessment (open-book)
  • Book a class with the instructor
  • Complete the Summative Assessment (closed-book)
  • Complete the practical safe handling and shooting of a firearm
  • The Certificate of Proficiency and a statement of results is issued to you within five working days after successful completion of the course

2. Apply for a Competency Certificate

  • The Competency Certificate is issued by the Central Register (SAPS)
  • Must have completed the knowledge of the Firearms Control Act
  • Must possess a certificate of proficiency and SOR for the applicable firearm
  • Apply at the SAPS for a competency certificate
  • Pay the fees
  • Wait for the approval of your application

3. Apply for a license to possess a firearm:

  • Must possess a Competency Certificate issued by the SAPS
  • Purchase a firearm
  • Apply for a license to possess the firearm
  • Submit a motivation for the possession of a firearm along with your application

Firearm Training Sequence:

Category 1:

This firearm training category is currently the entry level or “Learning assumed to be in place” for all other Firearm Unit Standards. This category is also the entry level for category two.

117705: Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No.60 of 2000)

Category 2:

This category is the requirement for Private Firearm ownership or first time firearm ownership. These Unit Standards are the equivalent of what is known internationally as BASIC LEVEL. This category is also the entry level to category three.

119649: Handle and use a Handgun.

119650: Handle and use of a self-loading Rifle or Carbine

119651: Handle and use of a manually operated Rifle or Carbine

119652: Handle and use of a Shotgun

Category 2:

This category is applicable to Security Guards and anyone issued with a company firearm. This  category is for firearms licensed to a company or institution for business purposes.

This means that a security officer who carries a handgun will be required to complete 117705, then 119649 and thereafter 123515.

This category can be seen as an Intermediate level or Duty-related level.

123511: Handle and use of a Self-loading Rifle or Carbine for Business purposes

123519: Handle and use of a Manually operated Rifle or Carbine for Business purposes
